Axfood is reducing its use of plastic by a further 300 tonnes in our largest plastic slimming down to date! ♻️

The larger packages of minced meat from Axfood’s own brand Garant are now getting a new packaging solution. By replacing today’s plastic trays with a thin plastic film, the use of plastic for packaging is reduced by almost 75 percent.

Last year, Garant’s mince in packs of 300 and 500 grams switched from trays to flowpacks. It reduced the use of plastic by 100 tonnes. Axfood has been carrying out similar initiatives for several years, including for Garant’s oriental bread and meatballs.

“The experience from last year’s packaging change shows that it is possible to use significantly less plastic without compromising either the quality of the product or the function of the packaging. The fact that we can now use the same solution for the larger packages means that we can reduce the use of plastic even further. In addition, flowpack packaging is easier to recycle,” says Tove Almgren, packaging developer at Axfood’s purchasing and logistics company Dagab.

Reducing the amount of packaging material and increasing the possibility of material recycling is an important part of our work to reduce the climate and environmental impact of packaging. 🌍
