In Côte d’Ivoire, we got to get close to the people behind our ingredients.

Recently, Head of Sustainable Trade Julie Haugli Aarnæs, Quality and Sustainability Manager Wibecke Ødegård Johansen and Category Manager Roger Bakkland from Unil went on a study trip to the Ivory Coast together with Etisk handel Norge – Ethical Trade Norway, the Norwegian Embassy, Norad, Fairtradenorge, FairtradeAfrica, the Norwegian African Business Association, Hennig Olsen, @Foodman, Dagab and Importaco.
The goal was to learn more about the production of cocoa and cashew, and to understand more about the everyday lives of the people who grow, process and deliver the raw materials further in the value chain.
Through factory visits, meetings with cooperatives and conversations with small farmers, we got to see how labor-intensive production is, and how many factors affect both quality, income and working conditions.
For us, this was an important reminder that responsible trading is about understanding risk, asking better questions and collaborating with players who know the conditions locally.
We take the insights from the trip with us in the work with due diligence assessments, supplier follow-up and assessment of new collaborations.
