Garant first with tuna in Tetra Pak packaging Axfood continues to develop the range of the future

As the first player in Sweden and one of the first in the world, the group is now launching tuna in Tetra Pak packaging, under its own brand Garant. The new packaging for tuna in water and tuna in sunflower oil represents an important step towards more resource-efficient packaging solutions with less climate impact, and strengthens the work for a more sustainable food chain. For the consumer, the content is the same as before. The difference lies in the packaging. The new solution consists mainly of cardboard from renewable raw materials and the Tetra Pak packaging weighs significantly less than a traditional can, while providing the same long shelf life. “This is exactly the type of innovation that we want to drive within our own brand products. For the customer, it is a well-known product, but with new packaging that uses less material and helps reduce resource use. By developing both products and packaging, we can take important steps towards a more sustainable range, says Dorothea Lüftner, Head of Private Label at Dagab, Axfood’s purchasing and logistics company. The launch has been carried out in collaboration with Tetra Pak and seafood producer Jealsa. It means that Garant will be the first in Sweden and one of the first in the world to offer tuna in this type of carton-based packaging. – This is a good example of how we, together with our customers and partners, can develop packaging solutions that meet new needs in established food categories. For producers and brands, it is about being able to offer more formats while at the same time meeting increased demands for resource efficiency. Through the new packaging, we offer a carton-based alternative that combines long shelf life without refrigeration with efficient logistics and a lower climate footprint, says Katrin Andersson, CEO of Tetra Pak North Europe. The packaging solution builds on developments in other product categories where carton-based packaging has already become an established alternative, for example for legumes and tomato products. The launch is part of Axfood’s long-term work to develop more sustainable packaging solutions and reduce the use of materials with a higher resource and climate impact. The cardboard-based packaging weighs less than cans and contributes to more efficient logistics. According to Tetra Pak’s calculations, the climate footprint of the new packaging is reduced by up to 85 percent compared to cans. Garant Tuna in water and Tuna in sunflower oil are available at Willys, Hemköp, Tempo, City Gross and Snabbgross.
