Garant’s new hybrid sausage Nöt & Grönt halves the climate footprint

Garant's hybrid ground beef Nöt & Grönt, with half beef and half vegetables, has become a success – and halves the climate footprint compared to regular ground beef. Now Garant, together with Generation Pep, is launching the new Nöt & Grönt Färskkorv Kabanoss. Just like its predecessor, the ground beef has benefits for health, the planet and the wallet.

Two years ago, Axfood and Garant were the first to launch a hybrid ground beef made from equal parts beef and vegetables on a large scale . Since then, a ready-to-bake hamburger made from the Nöt & Grönt ground beef has also been launched. Nöt & Grönt has become a sales success. In addition to halving the climate footprint*, the ground beef – because it contains half the vegetables – is healthier and cheaper than regular ground beef.

Now comes the next product, when Garant’s new Nöt & Grönt Färskkorv Kabanoss lands on store shelves at Willys, Hemköp, Tempo and City Gross. Just like before, the product is Nyckelhålsmarkt, carries the Meat from Sweden label and has been developed as part of Axfood’s collaboration with Generation Pep, which works for better health for young people.

– Hybrid products continue to grow and are a smart way to make it easier for consumers to eat both sustainably and healthily, without sacrificing taste or habits. We know that we need to reduce meat consumption for both our health and the planet’s sake, but if we are to succeed in doing so, it must happen together with the consumer. When we manage to combine taste, value for money and ease of use with a product that also reduces the climate footprint and is appreciated by many, we can make a difference, says Ellinor Puerto , Head of Range Development EMV at Axfood’s purchasing and logistics company Dagab.

The fresh sausage is excellent for both frying and grilling, is tasty, juicy and has a meaty feel with a good texture, although it is a little softer due to the vegetables. The sausage consists of equal parts beef (47 percent) and vegetables (26 percent carrot and 21 percent cauliflower), and a kabanos spice blend (6 percent) with a taste of paprika and garlic.

The sausage was developed as part of Axfood’s multi-year collaboration with Generation Pep. In addition to Nöt & Grönt, products such as the breakfast cereal Pepp Pops have been launched. Together with Willys, Hemköp and Snabbgross, Generation Pep has also developed various types of campaigns and materials to inspire young people to eat healthier snacks in stores and online.

– We want to give more people the opportunity to eat healthy and nutritious food, and not least to make a difference in children’s health and everyday life. That’s why it feels important that we are now launching another keyhole-labeled, healthy and affordable product together, when the Nöt & Grönt minced meat and hamburger now also gets a sequel with the Nöt & Grönt sausage, says Carolina Klüft , operations manager at Generation Pep.

Since Axfood launched Garant’s Nöt & Grönt ground beef, over two million packages, equivalent to over 1,000 tons, have been sold – which compared to if it had been sold as regular ground beef, has reduced the climate impact by around 15,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents*.

*The climate footprint is taken from the RISE climate database for food. For pure ground beef, it amounts to approximately 28 CO2e per kilo for Swedish ground beef, for the Nöt & Grönt ground beef (which consists of half Swedish ground beef and half vegetables in the form of equal parts Swedish carrots and French/Belgian cauliflower) the climate footprint is approximately 14.2 CO2e. For a beef sausage (with 90 percent meat content/Swedish ground beef), the climate footprint is approximately 25.2 CO2e per kilo, and for the Nöt & Grönt sausage the climate footprint is approximately 13.2 CO2e per kilo.
